I think that this is transgressive because it is obviously out of place and is not supposed to be there. This is very controversial and that is why I picked this example. Americans who clearly do not like Islamic people created this. It was created out of hate and it is very sad. Some people may call this a persons right to freedom of speech and that they are allowed to say and write what they would like as part of their rights, however, others see it as a hate crime. This center is a place of Islamic pride, where they go to worship and congregate together. It should not be a place of hatred and shame, which is what people have made it. This was very interesting for me because I got to see first hand how differently people see things. To the person who did this, they probably saw it as freedom of speech and just as transgressive and that nothing was wrong with it. However, to the people that it hurt it is a lot more than that. Therefore I think that it depends on the person to determine what is transgressive and what isn’t.
Hi Abby. This image is very disturbing and one that I think definitely qualifies as transgressive. You raise an interesting point about where we draw the lines between freedom of speech and hate crimes. I tend to side of a hate crime here because this sign contributes to institutional systems of oppression that impede on the equality of U.S. citizens, not to mention physical and mental harm. Very scary sign, indeed….
Wow, this image is horrible. You really wonder what goes thru peoples heads when they do these types of things. Definitely a transgressive sign. I agree that it is interesting to weigh the differences between freedom of speech and hate crimes like this.
I agree, this was a very good example of a transgressive sign, it is clearly bashing Islamic people as you stated and the words presented on the building are uncalled for and rude. Your image also goes back to how people were brought up and their views as to whether they would consider this transgressive or not. It is so hard to find an image that is truly considered transgressive; but in my opinion you did a very good job!
